Six Archaeology Students Udayana University Participated in MBKM RIIM BRIN in the Bumiayu Site

Denpasar, 26 April 2025 - Six students from the Archaeology Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Udayana University participated in the MBKM RIIM program "Civilization Exploration in the Bumiayu Region and North Serayu Mountains" Batch I organized by the Badan Riset dan Inovasi Nasional (BRIN). Students were in the Bumiayu Kawasan Stasiun Lapangan (KSL) or Field Station Area which was inaugurated on April 26 2025 and also invited the Archaeology Study Program Coordinator to attend.



During their time in KSL Bumiayu, students have learned about several important things regarding site findings with several expert archaeologists such as Prof. Harry Widianto and Dr. Thomas Sutikna, M.Hum., Ph.D.. Prof. Harry Widianto gave a lecture about Homo erectus during the Pleistocene. Meanwhile, Dr. Thomas Sutikna, M.Hum., Ph.D., invited the students to observe, examine, and directly handle findings in the Practical Fossil Identification and Findings Handling lectures. All programmed activities will continue until mid-July 2025.




BRIN's RIIM program "Civilization Exploration in the Bumiayu Region and North Serayu Mountains" aims to reveal ancient human civilization and the dynamics of the ancient environment in Bumiayu. This program targets collaboration among scientists across disciplines and is expected to drive scientific progress, which is a crucial foundation for development in various other fields.


These are the names of students who took part in MBKM RIIM BRIN activities in KSL Bumiayu: 

1. Arief Catur Pamungkas, Class of 2021. GAPS research internship (Geoscience, Paleoenvironment, and Archaeology Spatial).

2. Irfan Maullana Azizy, Class of 2021. Pleistocene-Holocene research internship.

3. Glorya Rosniat Waruwu, Class of 2022. Environmental Archeology research internship

4. Agung Purba, Class of 2021. PRIMATE research internship (Paleoanthropological Research in Indonesia: Migration, Adaptation, Transformation, and Evolution).

5. Muhammad Alfian Ardi Nugraha, Class of 2022. VEGAN research internship (Vegetal and Organic Analysis in Archaeology).

6. Abhista Ramadhani Wicaksono, Class of 2021. Intern research ANTRACT (Anthropic Traces and Residue Analysis on Artifact).


Since proposal preparation, students have been guided intensively by the Archaeology Study Program Lecturer, Rochtri Agung Bawono, S.S., M.Si.. He provided direction and additional knowledge about research to prepare them for excavation at KSL Bumiayu.

The students expressed their gratitude to BRIN for this valuable opportunity because it has opened up a space for direct learning from experts and given them real experience as researchers. "We also thank our lecturers at UNUD who continue to support and provide us with knowledge before leaving." said Arief, one of the student representatives.

This activity provides learning experience outside the campus that not only broadens their insights but also prepares the students to produce outputs in the form of final projects. “We hope that in the next batch, more friends from Udayana University Archaeology will be interested in joining. For ourselves, we hope to produce perfect final projects from this research experience,” Arief added.
