3 Archaeology Students Present Interim Results of MBKM Independent Research: The Importance of World War II Remnants in Balikpapan for Strengthening IKN Identity
Denpasar, July 31, 2025 - The Archaeology Study Program of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB), Udayana University (UNUD) successfully held a Student Independent Research / Research MBKM Research Presentation with the topic “Identification of the Important Value of World War II Archaeological Remains in Balikpapan as a Strengthener of the Identity of the National Capital City (IKN) Indonesia”.
This activity took place in Room 21, Ida Bagus Mantra Building, FIB UNUD on Thursday, July 31, 2025, at 10:00-13:00 WITA. This research was chaired by Dr. Ni Ketut Puji Astiti Laksmi, S.S., M.Si. with research team members Zuraidah, S.S., M.Si., Kristiawan, S.S., M.A., Sebastian Bramantyo Nugroho, Anak Agung Ayu Ngurah Jessika Nareswari, and Immanuel Excelson Daniel Gosal. This activity also involved Stevanus Reawaru, S.S. as a partner of the Culture Preservation Center Region XIV.
The event was attended by Rochtri Agung Bawono, S.S., M.Si. and I Made Agus Julianto, S.S., M.Sc. as examining lecturers, as well as supervisors Dr. Ni Ketut Puji Astiti Laksmi, S.S., M.Si. and Zuraidah, S.S., M.Si.. Kristiawan, S.S., M.A. also attended online, while Kadek Dedy Prawirajaya R, S.S., M.Si., Stevanus Reawaru, S.S., and students of the Archaeology Study Program of FIB UNUD participated in the discussion.
In their presentation, the research team presented preliminary findings related to the types, types, and distribution of World War II archaeological remains in Balikpapan. This research emphasizes the importance of preserving these remains as part of strengthening national identity, especially in the context of the relocation of the National Capital to East Kalimantan.
This research is expected to be an important foothold for further studies that are more in-depth about the history, culture, and archaeological remains in the Kalimantan region which are still very much to be explored for all.
