Implementation of Activities Excavations by the Archeology Study Program in Pejeng, Gianyar

On January 22-26 2023, the Archeology Study Program at Udayana University initiated excavation activities in the Pedapdapan area, Pejeng, Gianyar, precisely north of the Dalem Tarukan Temple. This activity was carried out to follow up on research previously carried out by the Archeology Study Program at Udayana University in 2016.

This location was chosen because there were reports of finding brick artifacts around the location, moreover, the land at the location had quite an anomaly in contrast to the surrounding area. Land conditions that are less productive, top soil who have tried to plant crops only 30 cm deep because plant growth was hampered by 'something' believed to be an indication of the existence of an object underground which is thought to be an object of archaeological research.

The excavation activity was attended by 70 students and lecturers, with Mr. Kristiawan, S.S., M.A. as an activity supervisor. For 5 days, excavation participants were divided into 4 groups to carry out activities and each group opened an excavation box. The findings found in the excavation area this time included brick fragments, pottery fragments and brick structures.

Many students have never participated in excavation activities before, so this activity is their first experience. “Because this is my first experience in field excavation, I am very excited. This excavation has very complete equipment, making it easier for students. "The area chosen is also an area full of archaeological remains, which is very exciting," said Switha from the class of 2020 as one of the participants in the excavation activity.

From this excavation activity, students gained a lot of experience and new knowledge regarding excavation activities as well as learning to work together in groups which they hope will be useful in the future.
