Udayana University FIB Archaeology Student and Interdisciplinary Team Win Third Place at the 2026 KPKM Expo with the Film “Pulau Plastik”
Denpasar – Ridwan Hadist Syahputra, a student of the Archaeology Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB), Universitas Udayana, together with an interdisciplinary team, won Third Place in the Social Humanities Research Student Creativity Program (PKM-RSH) at the KPKM Udayana PKM Center Expo, held on Sunday, October 4, 2026, on the second floor of the Lecture Building, Universitas Udayana.
The achievement was earned by an interdisciplinary team from FIB, led by Sufi Amalia from the History Study Program. The team members were Rania Cantika Sari (Japanese Literature), Ridwan Hadist Syahputra (Archaeology), Gabriela Tasiana Dewi (English Literature), and Fransiska Novalia Febri Amania (English Literature). Throughout the research preparation and implementation process, the team was supervised by Citra Iqliyah Darojah, M.A., a lecturer from the Archaeology Study Program.
The team’s achievement was supported by their research proposal entitled “Representing the Environmental Crisis in the Documentary Film Pulau Plastik (2021): A Content Analysis of Policy and Lifestyle Narratives.” In general, the research proposal examines the issue of the plastic waste crisis in Indonesia through the lens of audiovisual media.
The research applies comparative content analysis to examine how the documentary film Pulau Plastik portrays responsibility for the ecological crisis. The team compares two main narratives: a policy-industry narrative, which focuses on the roles of government, regulations, and producer responsibility, and an individual lifestyle narrative, which focuses on consumption behavior and people's habits of disposing of waste. The research ultimately aims to produce a “Plastic Crisis Responsibility Attribution Map”, which can serve as an evaluation tool to promote more balanced and effective environmental campaigns and communication in the future.
Ridwan Hadist Syahputra also contributed ideas to the development of the research concept. According to Ridwan, the issue of plastic waste was chosen because it remains a relevant concern at both national and international levels. The use and management of plastic continue to be issues that require attention.
The Third Place achievement at the 2026 KPKM Udayana PKM Center Expo is expected to encourage the academic community of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences to continue innovating, collaborating across disciplines, and responding to critical issues in society. Following the achievement, Ridwan expressed his hope that Indonesia can become a country capable of managing waste efficiently and effectively for the sustainability of future generations.
