The Involvement of Archaeology Study Program Lecturers in the Cultural Heritage Designation Process in Pekalongan City
Pekalongan, June 2, 2026 - The Archaeology Program contributed to the designation of cultural heritage sites as part of the implementation of Law No. 11 of 2010 on Cultural Heritage. Furthermore, the involvement of Archaeology Program faculty members as part of the Cultural Heritage Expert Team embodies the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, specifically community service.
The Cultural Heritage designation process has been conducted annually by the Pekalongan City Government through the Department of Tourism, Culture, Youth, and Sports since 2019. The Pekalongan City Cultural Heritage Expert Team (TACB) consists of five members: Agus Hamzah (Junior Legal Analyst at the Legal Division of the Pekalongan City Secretariat), Afdlila Ranganti (Junior Cultural Officer at the Pekalongan City Department of Tourism, Culture, Youth, and Sports), Adhesty Septana Noer (Junior Cultural Officer at the Central Java Provincial Department of Culture and Creative Economy), Vita Marshinta Devi (Architect/Retired Senior Planner at the Regional Development Planning Agency (BAPPEDA) of Pekalongan City), and Moch. Dirhamsyah (Head of the News & Cooperation Division at Radio Kota Batik Pekalongan), and Citra Iqliyah Darojah (Assistant Lecturer in the Archaeology Program at the Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University).
The annual designation of Cultural Heritage Sites is carried out by the Pekalongan City Cultural Heritage Preservation Agency (TACB) with support from the Department of Tourism, Culture, Youth, and Sports (Dinparbudpora) through a series of site surveys of Suspected Cultural Heritage Sites (ODCB), the drafting of designation recommendation reports, and designation hearings. In 2026, there are two ODCBs designated for designation: the Former Pekalongan Residency House and the Pekalongan Christian Cemetery Gate. Both ODCBs are Cultural Heritage Sites classified as buildings. The Pekalongan City Environmental Agency manages the Pekalongan Christian Cemetery Gate, while the Former Pekalongan Residency House is managed by the Central Java Provincial Government Asset Agency.
In addition to serving as an implementation of the Cultural Heritage Law No. 11 of 2010, the designation process represents a form of inter-agency collaboration, involving government sectors, academia, and practitioners. The designation process is also conducted through multidisciplinary studies involving archaeologists, architects, historians, and legal experts.
The results of the study, in the form of a recommendation draft for the Cultural Heritage Designation, were submitted by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Youth, and Sports (Dinparbudpora) to the Mayor of Pekalongan, with oversight from the Legal Affairs Bureau, and were subsequently ratified via a Mayoral Decree. In addition to the designation recommendation draft, the TACB also prepared a ranking recommendation draft to serve as the basis for the City-Level Cultural Heritage status.
It is hoped that this initiative will continue on an ongoing basis to sustain the spirit of cultural heritage preservation, specifically in the city of Pekalongan and more broadly throughout Central Java.
