CONSORTIUM OF ARCHAEOLOGY STUDY PROGRAMS IN INDONESIA
Sangiran, Monday, July 27, 2026 – The Archaeology Study Programs from seven universities in Indonesia held a meeting to establish a consortium of Archaeology Study Programs in Indonesia. The event began following the opening ceremony of PATI (Integrated Indonesian Archaeological Research) at the Sangiran Early Man Museum, Krikilan Cluster. This event was facilitated by the Arsari Djojohadikusumo Foundation (YAD).
The formation of the Consortium of Archaeology Programs in Indonesia is a follow-up to several coordination meetings that had previously been held online. This initiative is crucial because Archaeology programs in Indonesia have not yet had a program association, which is essential for collaboration among archaeology programs and for accreditation purposes.
The consortium includes seven universities in Indonesia that offer Archaeology programs, namely the University of Indonesia, Gadjah Mada University, Udayana University, Hasanuddin University, Halu Oleo University, Jambi University, and Andalas University. The consortium is led by Dr. Yadi Mulyadi, S.S., M.A., from Hasanuddin University, with Irsyad Leihitu, M.Hum., from Jambi University serving as secretary.
The consortium’s meeting resulted in several agreements, which are outlined in the minutes below:
All Chairs/Coordinators of Archaeology Undergraduate Study Programs (S1) throughout Indonesia have agreed to form the Indonesian Archaeology Study Program Consortium, as outlined in the Implementation Arrangement (IA) document.
All Chairs/Coordinators of Archaeology Undergraduate Study Programs (S1) throughout Indonesia, through deliberation and consensus, appointed Dr. Yadi Mulyadi, S.S., M.A., as Chair and Irsyad Leihitu, M.Hum., as Secretary of the Consortium.
The Consortium has agreed that the Archaeology Study Program, as an academic discipline, falls under the “Humanities” field of study, with the degree of Bachelor of Humanities (S.Hum) and/or Bachelor of Archaeology (S.Ark).
Regarding the third point, the Consortium will officially submit a request for revision concerning the reclassification of the “Archaeology” academic discipline from the “Social Sciences” field to the “Humanities” field, as stipulated in: Decision of the Director General of Higher Education, Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia No. 96/B/KPT/2025 concerning the Names of Study Programs in Academic and Professional Education.
The Consortium will also submit a request to add the “Archaeology” academic discipline to the “Humanities” field of study, as listed in: Decision of the Director General of Higher Education, Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia No. 66/B/KPT/2026 concerning the Classification of Academic Disciplines for the Evaluation of Academic Promotion and Educator Certification for Lecturers.
The Consortium agreed to collaborate in the following areas: (a) education, in the form of faculty and student exchange programs; (b) research, in the form of collaborative research programs; (c) community service, in the form of archaeology outreach for the public; and (d) publications, through the joint publication of articles, each of which will be detailed in an Implementation Arrangement (IA) document.
The Consortium agreed to design and establish Graduate Competency Standards (SKL) for the undergraduate level, to be finalized no later than December 2026.
Furthermore, the Consortium was given a maximum of two years to prepare for the establishment of the “Indonesian Association of Archaeology Study Programs,” a legal entity in accordance with applicable regulations.
